Introduction to The People’s History of the Wine Industry

Welcome to the People’s History of Wine, a collection of narratives from Black, Indigenous, AAPI, LGBTQIA+, and women of color who have contributed to the cultivation of a billion-dollar industry. Whether you consider yourself a connoisseur or a part of the industry, wine culture has imposed truths upon us all, which are not inclusive but serve to classify taste, behavior, and people. This culture is informed by historical narratives written and passed down that glorify white Euro-centric culture and men, omitting centuries of exploitation of Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asians, women, and LGBTQIA+ people.

So, what do we do about this? We can decide how we will continue to invite people into the space, ensuring a comfortable seat for everybody! And that we inspire appreciation to the hands responsible for each pour we sip.

Sit with us and explore the history of people untold. Some new, some old. We seek to deconstruct the dominant white supremacist, Euro-centric, patriarchal narratives that have omitted and devalued the significance and presence of BIWOC, AAPI, and queer folks in the wine industry. All we ask is that you open your hearts and minds to understanding and appreciating the labor, journey, and contributions of people who sowed seeds and dreams. Through the People’s History of Wine, we will pay homage to the many vines that converged in order to bring us all together. To make space for future generations of BIWOC, AAPI, and queer growers, makers, and tasters alike. Reconsidering the reality of a socially just culture that truly reflects the richness of its people.
